Old Maid Flats
starting at 1,900 feet elevation on the west side of Mt. Hood, Oregon , February 2, 2008
Fifteen of us went out on this alternate destination from the planned trip to White River (the traffic was
stop-and-go on Hwy 26 due to the large amount of snow fall). We drove up Lolo Pass Rd to the snow-plow
turnaround and then trekked along and beside the forest service roads into Old Maid Flats. The snow
was some of the best of the season and there was two to four feet of wonderful powder to trek through.
Since we were the first one's out, we changed leads constantly to not burn ourselves out breaking trail
in the deep snowfall. We travelled four miles total in the three hours we were out; gain was 350 feet.
The last photos in this series show some in the group throwing themselves like kids into the great powder.
